Today in Kindergarten

I:

  • was told that our field trip (in May) to the zoo should happen, "RIGHT now. or ELSE, teacher."
  • sent a child to the principal for using the f-word.
  • taught my kids that "supercallifragilisticexpialadocious" is a real word. And they can say it, too.
  • got another shoe thrown at me.
  • told a girl that she is no longer allowed to use glue in kindergarten because she was EATING it. Gross.
  • told another girl she couldn't flip off someone just cause they "really pissed me off, teacher!"
  • told two boys that they could NOT compare belly buttons by unbuttoning their pants.
  • was told, "My baby sister Effie is here now and she cries so much teacher but I love her so much and Mom says I can help take care of her but I don't want to change her yucky diaper I just want to feed her her bottle is that OK?" (yes..that was one sentence)
  • sent another child to time out because he was throwing blocks at another child.
  • said "I have HAD IT today!!! Don't push me!" at least 5 times.
  • gave the teacher look of death at least 100 million times.
  • showed the COOLEST video of caterpillar/butterfly metamorphosis.
  • tied a bajillion shoelaces.
  • tried not to raise my voice (and failed a couple times).
  • told my morning class that their bladders are not connected. No one else is using the bathroom for at least 15 minutes, because you do not have to go at the same time!
  • told a boy, "No you may not use the bathroom. Why? Because you don't have to go - you're just bored."
  • Got 12 hugs from Dylan (he counted. Sweetheart)
  • Took many, many, many deep, calming breaths.
  • Smiled. A couple times, at least.
  •  was told that a little boy used "the z word, teacher!!" I still have no clue what word the "z-word" is.
  • Heard a girl call someone else "a total meanie-poopy-diaper-spaghetti head!" Interesting choice of insults.

All this in ONE DAY.

I think it's time for Spring Break!!

Nostalgia

Back When by Tim McGraw

We got too complicated.
It's all way overrated.
I like the old and out-dated
Way of life.

Back when a hoe was a hoe
Coke was a coke
And crack's what you were doing
When you were cracking jokes
Back when a screw was a screw
The wind was all that blew
And when you said I'm down with that
Well it meant you had the flu
I miss back when.
I miss back when.

I was listening to this song today and got a little nostalgic for my childhood. :)

Things I Never Thought I'd Say: Kindergarten Edition

Your nose is not an all-you-can-eat buffet.

No, you may not dig in the trash for chocolate.

No, the leprechauns did not make you cut your hair with the scissors!!

Why do you have to miss recess? Because you poured glue all over your cubby when I wasn't looking.

Swearing in Spanish is the same thing as swearing in English. Yes you will get sent to Mr. Benson's office.

Your snot does not need to be colorful. Take the crayons out of your nose.

Seriously. This is just in my afternoon class!!! Kindergarten is nuts!

Faith

I've been thinking a lot about faith lately, and I've made some observations that I would like to share.

This Christmas, we had the opportunity to attend church again down here in the Southwest with James' mom. It's so funny how different things feel down here than in Utah. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of really good, faithful friends up in Utah that I admire and aspire to be like. But something about the faith down here is different.

It's simpler.

It's about living off the land; about putting everything you have into a ranch or a business.

It's about having to trust in God for your livelihood.

It's about learning to depend on your faith to make it through all the tough times.

It's about praying desperately for rain in a serious drought, and yet, still saying, "If it be thy will," and meaning it.

It's about knowing the names and lives of everyone around you...and being willing to step in at a moment's notice.

It's about simply...believing. Believing that Heavenly Father wants the best for you, and trusting him to do so.

I know that many of these things are universal, but it has been very refreshing to see the simple faith of the good folks who live down here. It's not limited to the Southwest, but I think the way of life down here helps to contribute to the faith and kindness of the people. I have never been so warmly welcomed into a ward than when I was in Texas or New Mexico. I have never felt so comfortable so quickly with a new group of people. I love this culture, this people. I love this land - the flatness, what some would call barren desert. It's not barren - there are pumpjacks and barbed wire fences and beautiful, uninterrupted sunsets. It's a land of hard work, of drought, of mud and sweat and tears.

It's beautiful.

See? Absolutely breathtaking.

Christmastime!!

This is my absolute favorite time of year!! I just love the Christmas season - and I especially love Christmas break! haha :)

Guess where we are this Christmas?

But really, I do love this time of year very much. I love being with family; I love the feeling of Christmas: the lights, the trees, Christmas on the Pecos, and everything involved with this holiday. It truly is the best time of year.
